Jazmine Sullivan

JazmineJazmine was raised and born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Her mother Pam was once a backing singer at Philadelphia International Records. Her father offered her the position of curator of the Historic Strawberry Mansion. She together with her family then relocated in to the historic landmark. The 2005 graduate of Philadelphia High School for the Creative and Performing Arts in which she was singing music major. Sullivan began singing in contralto with the choir for children, and then just a few years later, in the adult group. The exposure Sullivan had to secular music was initially limited "I was doing solos in the church and was approached by someone to sign to an gospel label when I was 11 years old, but I wasn't ready to do that," she recalls. "Then the time came that McDonald's was hosting a competition for students in big cities, I got a chance to perform 'Accept What God Does' on Showtime in the Apollo and the audience responded really well". She was just 13 when she sang in a duet with Stevie Wonder for his grandson's birthday celebration. Sullivan was the first to sign her contract to Jive Records when she was 15. There, she recorded an entire album. But it was never released. Sullivan was eventually dropped by the labels. They had a strong working relations and Missy Elliott. Elliott produced many of her tracks such as "Backstabbers" and "Backstabbers," which was produced by Timbaland.
